Staithes,
an old fishing village on the North Yorkshire Coast, lies tucked in at the
bottom of steep cliffs. It dates back to the early 1600s when it was home
to smugglers, brigands and fisherfolk. In the 1700 and 1800s the village
was one of the east coast’s most busy ports with ships visiting the
harbour as they plied the coastal trade.
Staithes did have a large fishing fleet and some fisherman still
work from the harbour The
area was also the start of the chemical industry in the England with the
production of alum taking place on the nearby cliffs.
The workings dating from 1650 can still be seen today.
Today the
village is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. There are great
walks along the cliff tops following the Cleveland Way footpath and short
walks fossil hunting on the foreshore.
Boat
trips can be taken from the village to fish or spot seals and other marine
life or time can be spent simply sitting on the beach. The
village has three pubs, a restaurant, bistro and of course a fish and chip
shop. There’s also a butchers, post office, hardware store and a few
gift shops.
